Notre Dame Cathedral Rebuild International Competition
To the people of the world, Paris’s Notre-Dame is one of France’s most recognizable focal points of the country’s lengthy history and culture. Equally, to the people of France, the Notre-Dame epitomizes French identity and collective memory in its emblem. The emblazing fires of Notre Dame in April of 2019 made for unforgettable feelings of anxiety and worry. But the catastrophe also brought rebirth, with all walks of life pooling their wisdom for Pari’s Notre Dream in giving a new lease of life to the city.
MAUD Architecture herein aimed to grasp this opportunity for transformation in redesigning Notre Dames damaged roof, writing a new chapter in Paris’ history, mixing new and old techniques in the continuation of the church’s history. The church’s garret oneself has told the story and manifested the special characteristics of the place, adopting lightweight concrete and glass models for the roof to intensify a modern Gothic personality in the architecture. Notre Dame’s medieval cloister has a new look, with white French terrazzo stone installed to reinstate a modern ambience. MAUD Architecture especially preserved the burnt section of the roof structure in order to exhibit the tragic event. The fire is all but one page in the story of the Notre Dame, also a stop during this journey, and a space becoming a vehicle for recording memories.
