Often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of architecture,” the Pritzker Architecture Prize honors living architects whose work has made a profound and lasting contribution to humanity and the built environment.

Open to all, regardless of nationality, race, creed, or ideology, the prize recognizes talent, vision, and commitment, and celebrates architecture as a meaningful expression of human values and cultural continuity.

Looking back at the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the prize often focused on architects known for bold, expressive styles and remarkable creativity.
These works emphasized formal innovation and material experimentation, with many architects pushing the boundaries of tradition and treating architecture as a sculptural art.
This approach helped give rise to the “starchitect” phenomenon that would dominate global architecture for decades.

However, since the 2010s, in response to global challenges such as climate change, social inequality, urban pressure, and the erosion of local cultures, the role of architecture has undergone a quiet but profound shift.

Architecture is no longer merely a symbol of aesthetic achievement—it is increasingly seen as a tool for responding to real-world issues, serving communities, and shaping a more sustainable future.
As a result, the Pritzker criteria have gradually evolved to recognize architects who balance innovation with social responsibility.

This shift signals a deeper question: the prize is no longer just about selecting beautiful buildings, but about redefining what architecture is meant to do.

From a focus on form to a focus on values, the architect’s role has moved from creating isolated icons to building inclusive, shared environments.
In this evolution, we find architecture’s most powerful response to its time.
